Face Time
THE BASICS:
Where are you from?
Alexander, Maine: 10
minutes from the eastern border with Canada. It's a no-stoplight
town.
Did you always know you wanted to come to Smith?
When I first started
looking at colleges, toward the end of 10th grade, Smith
immediately looked like a good fit on paper. I fell in love
when I came for an interview on a glorious April day.
NOW THE FUN STUFF:
Who gets the most face
time with you?
I have a roommate,
so she sees a lot of me. Also, my a cappella group, the Smithereens,
gets 7+ hours a week of rehearsal, plus gigs.
When was the last time you wore a dress?
A couple of weekends
ago. I'm trying to convince myself
that it's spring, but so far the snow hasn't helped.
What are you
reading now?
I'm drowning in reading
for my classes. In between all that, I'm trying to get through
The Forsyte Saga for the umpteenth time. I think
my next project will be The English
Patient, which I've been
wanting to read for years.
Do you eat fast food?
I don't generally
like it. Sometimes, though, I just
crave a burger. I think that's a consequence of overexposure
to vegan cutlets and polenta.
What do you miss most about home?
Sitting on the
windowsill by the stove while Mom cooks dinner. Watching
football with my dad and swearing at the TV. Drinking
Earl Grey with my best friend. Walks in the woods. My
cats.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite drama
is by far V for Vendetta. My favorite
comedy is probably The Birdcage. My mom and I pretty
much know it by heart. I do a pretty good Hank Azaria,
and she does a pretty good Gene Hackman.
What is your favorite thing to do in Northampton?
I like
to just browse the stores, and then sit down with a cup of
coffee. I also like to go out to dinner
with friends.
If you suddenly had two
hours of free time, what would you do?
That sounds so nice.
Write. Paint. Go
to Woodstar with some recreational reading. Make some
iced tea and watch an episode of Bones. Go to the
gym and watch C-SPAN.
What is your
favorite wall hanging in your room?
There's a terrific
picture of my best friend and me that was taken a few years
ago. I also have a picture of Ioan Gruffudd that I'm quite
fond of.
Do you consider
yourself an urban, suburban, or rural person?
I don't like
big cities, but I don't really consider myself a rural
or suburban person either. Small cities
appeal to me. I like Northampton. I
love Burlington, VT.
What annoys the heck
out of you?
Pettiness and self-absorption.
Who are your role models?
People who know
how to selectively sacrifice. I'm still
learning to give up what I like for what I love.
What single piece of
advice would you give to President Christ?
Three words: Mountain Day II. (Maybe on the first
perfect spring day...) |
