An
Award for Outstanding Teaching
On Tuesday,
April 4, four Smith faculty members were honored for their
outstanding teaching records with the presentation of the
third annual Sherrerd Teaching Awards.
The Kathleen Compton
Sherrerd ’54 and John J. F. Sherrerd Prizes for Distinguished
Teaching were established in 2002 with a generous gift from
the Sherrerds to recognize sustained and distinguished teaching
and demonstrated enthusiasm and excellence.
The 2006 Sherrerd
Teaching Award winners were Giovanna Bellesia, Italian language
and literature; H. Robert Burger, Achilles Professor of Geology;
Glenn Ellis, engineering; and Marguerite Itamar Harrison,
Spanish and Portuguese.
The Sherrerd family
has maintained close ties with Smith College. In addition
to their donation to establish the Sherrerd Teaching Awards,
Jay Sherrerd and his late wife Kathleen have made gifts to
the college for a scholarship fund, an art acquisition fund,
and others. Jay Sherrerd’s late mother, Isabel Foulkrod
Sherrerd, was a member of the Class of 1926.
