To the Smith Community:
It is my privilege to announce Kathleen McCartney as the 11th President of Smith College.
Kathy is the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an exceptional academic leader who inspires respect from everyone with whom she engages. An internationally recognized authority on child development, early education and education policy, she has been a transformative leader at Harvard, working with faculty, staff and students, as well as with deans across the university, to reinvent a school of education for the 21st century.
I invite you to learn more about Kathy and to send her your greetings as she joins our community. We will host a campus welcome after classes resume in January, and will webcast it to the Smith community around the world. In the meantime, I invite you to “meet” her via video and learn more about her life experiences and her commitment to liberal arts education and women’s education.
Throughout the search, the committee was informed by what you told us was most important for Smith in its next decade. We sought a president who could powerfully articulate the college’s mission of educating women for leadership, an individual committed to making Smith the college of choice for talented, diverse and ambitious women around the world. As we came to know Kathy through the search process and engaged with those who know her accomplishments and personal qualities, we came to understand that she brings all of that and more. Her values align powerfully with the values of Smith and the future we envision for the college.
When Kathy begins her presidency on July 1, she will be taking forward a remarkably strong and vibrant institution, one that has benefited from enlightened presidential leadership throughout its history. On behalf of the board of trustees, I express profound appreciation to Carol Christ for her leadership over the past decade. With great excitement for the future of Smith, I extend a warm welcome to Kathy and her family.
