Student Vocal Ensembles

Glee Club
The Glee Club is open by audition to women in all of the upper classes, including Ada Comstock scholars. The group rehearses twice weekly and performs at all of the college's choral concerts, including convocation, Montage, Autumn Serenade, and the commencement concert. They also tour in the U.S. during the year, performing at schools, colleges and universities on the East coast and in the Midwest. The group performs a diverse repertoire, including the premiere women's choral pieces from Western art music, new works commissioned specifically for the group, and jazz, contemporary, and folk music. Each spring, men's glee clubs from colleges such as Harvard, Rutgers, the Naval Academy, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia collaborate with the Glee Club for a performance of a major choral work that have included Carmina Burana, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Brahms' German Requiem. For more information about the Glee Club, please the group's conductor, Jonathan Hirsh, at jhirsh@smith.edu or visit the Glee Club website.

Smith College Chorus
The Smith College Chorus and Chamber Choir are open by audition to women of all classes from first-years through Ada Comstock Scholars. The College Chorus rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:10-5:50 p.m. The Chamber Choir is open to women already in the Chorus or Glee Club in order to provide a small ensemble singing experience. The College Chorus sings a wide variety of repertoire from Medieval through the 21st century. Fall concerts include Montage, Autumn Serenade, and Vespers; spring events include hosting a festival of women's choral ensembles, regional tours, and combining with a men's group to collaborate on a major work with orchestra and soloists. Past performances have included works such as the Mozart Requiem, the Verdi Requiem, Bernstein Chichester Psalms, and Beethoven Symphony 9. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester. If interested, please contact Ryan Brandau at 585-3177, rbrandau@email.smith.edu or visit the College Chorus Web site for more information.

Chamber Singers
The Chamber Singers vocal ensemble is a small, select group of approximately 20 to 30 singers drawn from the members of the Glee Club and the College Chorus by audition. The group convenes every other year, joining the other choral organizatons in performances throughout that year, and culminating with a tour, often to Europe, after commencement. If you would more information about the Chamber Singers, please contact the group's conductor, Jonathan Hirsh, at jhirsh@smith.edu or visit the Chamber Singers Web site.
