Ryan James Brandau joined the Smith College Faculty in 2007 as Assistant Director of Choral Activities and Lecturer. He directs the Smith College Chorus and teaches conducting, sight-singing, and choral literature in the music department.

Ryan received the Master of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in choral conducting from the Yale School of Music, where he studied conducting with Simon Carrington and Marguerite Brooks. While at Yale, he directed the United Girls Choir of North Haven, the choir of the Episcopal Church at Yale, and the Christ Church Choir. He also served as principal assistant conductor of the Yale Camerata and manager of the Schola Cantorum and taught counterpoint and harmony in the music department at Yale College.

Prior to pursuing graduate study in conducting, Ryan attended the University of Cambridge in the UK as a Gates Scholar, earning the MPhil degree in historical musicology. In Cambridge, he founded a women's chamber choir, Conspiratio, and sang with the choirs of Jesus, King's, and Clare colleges. He received his B.A. in music, with certificates in conducting performance and women's studies, from Princeton University, where he directed the co-ed a cappella group The Princeton Katzenjammers, conducted the University Sinfonia, and served as student assistant director of the Glee Club.

In addition to teaching at Smith, Ryan serves as choirmaster at Christ Church Episcopal and remains active as a choral arranger and professional singer.
