Wireless Network Access

LIBRARY LOCATIONS

Most areas in the Libraries support wireless:

  • Neilson Library (all levels, most areas)
  • Hillyer Art Library, Brown Fine Arts Center
  • Josten Performing Arts Library,
    Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts
    (Wireless cards are available on loan from Josten Library.)
  • Sophia Smith Collection/College Archives reading room, Alumnae Gymnasium
  • Young Science Library, Bass Hall

If your laptop already has a wireless card installed, you're all set. If not, you may purchase the appropriate wireless card at Smith's Computer Store (Stoddard Hall 22).

Please note that printing is not available via a wireless connection.

Look for these signs indicating that
you are in a wireless area. In Neilson Library access is available in most areas.

GETTING STARTED

Access is permitted for Smith students, faculty and staff with a Novell username and password. A Five College user would be able to connect only if s/he has registered with ITS staff to obtain a Smith College Novell username and password.

To start, open the wireless program on your laptop, select your location from the list of available wireless networks, and then launch your browser.

Handouts with these detailed instructions are available at the Neilson Library circulation and reference desks and at the main service desks in Hillyer, Josten, and Young libraries.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A wireless card in your laptop (available from Smith's Computer Store, Stoddard Hall 22) Wireless cards are available on loan from Josten Library. Loans are for a day at a time and contain installation software for older PCs (XP and Windows 2000 users can simply plug in and play.)
  • A Smith College Novell account (available to Smith College faculty, staff, and students and to 5-College students enrolled in a course at Smith)

INTERNET AND NETWORK ACCESS

How to access the Internet

PC Users
Mac Users
Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray located in the lower right side of you screen…
Open the Airport dialog box under system preferences…

Then [PC and Mac users]...
View Available Wireless Networks
Select your location from the list of available wireless networks
Click on your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer)
On the Welcome to Smith's Secure Wireless Network screen, type in your Novell username and password
Click on Log In
The Smith homepage will appear in your browser window

How to access the Smith Novell network

PC users:You will need to follow the instructions above before you can access the Smith Network:

  • Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop
  • Select Netware Login from the pop-up menu
  • Enter your Novell username and password in the login box

Mac users: Smith's Novell network does not currently support IPX or Appletalk. Use Fetch or another FTP application
