The Role of a Library in a Liberal Arts College
by Chris Loring
Director, Smith College Libraries
At the beginning of the 21st Century, in an age of information dominated by the Internet, what is the role of a library in a liberal arts college? My vision for the Smith College Libraries is that they remain the intellectual crossroads for the college and that we create in them inspiring environments for study, learning, interaction and discovery.
Since I arrived at Smith I have sought particularly to upgrade Neilson Library’s public spaces. As the flagship library, Neilson Library should be attractive and inviting to match the wealth of knowledge it contains. It should allow for quiet, reflective contemplation as well as provide new types of learning spaces that allow students to talk, debate and collaborate on projects.
Throughout the library strategic planning process undertaken in 2001/2002, it was clear that Neilson Library falls short of our vision. In our many conversations with students, they have made it clear that they want a more beautiful and inspiring Neilson Library.
As a first step to realizing our vision, to giving students what they want, we have planned to transform the space that was once the Periodicals Room and is currently a staff work area into a vibrant public space. With its high ceiling, large windows and beautiful lighting it will serve as a statement about what we want Neilson Library to be.
The Friends of the Smith College Libraries have chosen to champion the renovation of this space. I invite you to join the Friends in making this important renovation a reality.
