Gerald Stern

The Poetry Center's first event this fall brought the former New Jersey Poet Laureate to campus.

The Poetry Center at Smith College, in conjunction with the Lecture Commtitee, presented poet Gerald Stern at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, in Wright Hall Auditorium. Stern's many awards include the Lamont Poetry Prize, a National Book Award for This Time: New & Selected Poems, and the Ruth Lilly Prize for lifetime achievement.

Gerald Stern served as the first poet laureate of New Jersey, from 2000 to 2002. The post was eliminated in July 2003 by the state's General Assembly amid controversy surrounding comments made by Stern's successor, Amiri Baraka.
