Deadlines:
Lists are processed in the order received. Late lists may not be ready
when classes begin.
-
Required
Readings Only: Only required readings will be placed on reserve.
- Helping
Students Find Reserve Materials Easily: On your syllabus, please
give call numbers for items on print reserves and note which items are
on electronic reserve.
-
One
Copy of Books Only: One copy of each book on your list will be

size, please consult with a member of the reserve staff.
-
Materials
not owned by the Libraries. The options for acquiring items we
do not own are:
Ordering
Books:
- Please
order needed materials at least 10 weeks in advance. You can submit
the paper book order form or the web
order form.
- On
your reserve list, please include all items to be placed on
reserve and indicate any you have already ordered.
- In
Neilson Library, if your reserve list includes items not owned
or not on order, staff members will submit book orders charged to
your departmental fund.
- For
the other Smith Libraries: Consult reserve staff in Young Science
Library, Hillyer Art Library, and Josten Performing Arts Library for
any new materials not yet ordered.
Borrowing
Five College Books:
- If
an item is out of print, on order, or unobtainable, reserve staff
may be able to arrange a special loan from a Five College library
for the semester. Please do not borrow Five College items yourself
and ask that they go on reserve.
Using
Personal Copies:
- Please
use discretion in providing fragile, valuable or irreplaceable personal
copies for reserve. The libraries cannot guarantee their security.
- Periodical
Articles: For periodical articles, Neilson and Josten library reserve
staff will place the bound volume of the journal on reserve. Hillyer
Art Library and Young Science Library will place bound volumes on reserve
only if there are illustrations that cannot be reproduced adequately.
- Videos
(VHS, DVD, laser discs): Include Smith videos on your reserve list.
If you're interested in Five College videos for reserve, please consult
with reserve staff. You may provide personal copies of videos for reserve
if they are copyright compliant.
- Photocopies
and Copyright: Only one copy of a journal article or one copy
of one chapter of a book (or multiple chapters if the total pages do
not exceed 10% of the complete work) may be placed on reserve for a
single class one time only. You must secure copyright permission if
you want to place more than one copy of an article or more than one
chapter of a book on reserve, or if you plan to use any photocopies
in subsequent terms. Please consult with your departmental secretary
about required procedures. Smith College is a member of the Copyright
Clearance Center and complies with copyright regulations to the spirit
and letter of the law.
- Check
your List: We strongly recommend that you check with us to verify
that your items are on reserve before the semester starts so that we
can resolve problems before they become crises.
- Submit
your list: See the list of contacts
for reserves, and send your list to the appropriate person. Call
or email us with your questions.
