Questions

WHAT IS THE 'RESEARCH SKILLS FOR STUDENTS' COURSE?

Research Skills for Students is not an academic course. All students in Writing Intensive courses are automatically enrolled in it so they may take the Research Skills quiz.

WHAT IS THE RESEARCH SKILLS QUIZ?

The purpose of the Research Skills quiz is to help you learn some of the basic skills needed when you are looking for, evaluating, and using information for papers or other class assignments. The quiz deals with issues such as:

  • Academic integrity – how to avoid unintentional plagiarism
  • Citation style – how to get online or personal assistance
  • Evaluation of sources – how to distinguish between popular and scholarly sources, both on and off the web
  • Web search engine alternatives – how to begin searching for reliable information

HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE?

The quiz has only a few questions. If you get them all right the first time (using Research Skills, Take One), you are finished. If you get any question wrong, read the answers provided and take the quiz again (using Research Skills, Take Two) until you can score 100% on all questions. This should take only a few minutes to do. Don’t worry about grades – concentrate upon learning the material so that you can improve your academic performance in this and other classes.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE THE QUIZ?

You may take the Research Skills quiz whenever convenient for you during the same term in which you are enrolled in a writing intensive class. However the sooner you take the quiz the more quickly you will learn to be a better and more efficient researcher.

HOW DO I TAKE THE QUIZ?

Log onto Moodle by going to http://moodon.smith.edu and entering your Groupwise username and password. In your "My Courses" list, click on Research Skills for Students, then click on the appropriate quiz. (If you have any trouble logging on, call the User Support Center at x4487 for assistance.).

WHAT IF I DON'T SEE ANY RESEARCH SKILLS COURSE?

Send email to bsajdak@email.smith.edu. We will enroll you.
