What is the Research Skills Quiz? | How Do I Take the Quiz? | How Long Will This Take? | Questions

WHAT IS THE "RESEARCH SKILLS FOR STUDENTS" COURSE?

"Research Skills for Students" is not an academic course. All entering first-year students are automatically enrolled in the course so they may take the Research Skills quiz and the Plagiarism Challenge quiz.

DEADLINE

The deadline for completion of both quizzes is November 2, 2009. You must complete both quizzes in order to register for next term's classes.

WHAT IS THE RESEARCH SKILLS QUIZ?

The purpose of the Research Skills quiz is to help you learn some of the basic skills needed when you are looking for, evaluating, and using information for papers or other class assignments. The quiz deals with issues such as:

  • Academic integrity – how to avoid unintentional plagiarism
  • Citation style – how to get online or personal assistance
  • Evaluation of sources – how to distinguish between popular and scholarly sources, both on and off the web
  • Web search engine alternatives – how to begin searching for reliable information

HOW DO I TAKE THE QUIZ?

To get started, log on to Moodle and enter your Groupwise username and password.

In your "My Courses" list, click on the "Research Skills for Students" course, then on the Research Skills, Take One quiz.

If you have any trouble logging on, or don't see "Research Skills for Students" in your course list, call the ITS User Support Center at x4487 for assistance.

HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE?

The Research Skills, Take One quiz has only a few questions. If you get them all right the first time, you're done. You can then move on to the second quiz, the Plagiarism Challenge.

If you get any questions wrong, read the answers provided and take the Research Skills, Take Two quiz until you score 100% on all questions. This should take only a few minutes.

Note that you can repeat the Research Skills, Take Two quiz as many times as you wish. Don't worry about grades or scores - just concentrate on learning the material.

QUESTIONS

Please direct any questions about the quiz to Bruce Sajdak, Chair, Information Literacy Team, (413) 585-2967, bsajdak@smith.edu.
