What About Grades? | Student Access to the Quiz? | Who Has Taken the Quiz? | Questions

PURPOSE

The writing intensive quiz has been designed as a simple instruction tool to assist your students to learn about:

  • Academic integrity – how to avoid unintentional plagiarism
  • Citation style – how to get online or personal assistance
  • Evaluation of sources – how to distinguish between popular and scholarly sources both on
    and off the web
  • Web search engine alternatives – how to begin searching for reliable information

The quiz is only available to students currently enrolled in a writing intensive course.

FACULTY ACCESS TO THE QUIZ

All Smith faculty members are already enrolled in a Moodle course which will allow you to preview the quiz and review the answers to each question. After logging on to Moodle look for the Research Skills class – then click on Research Skills Assessment, Faculty Review.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THE QUIZ?

We ask your help in seeing that all students in writing intensive classes take this quiz regardless of course content. However if a student is enrolled in two such classes, she need go through this process only once.

WHEN SHOULD STUDENTS TAKE THE QUIZ?

Students may take the quiz at any time during the term in which they are enrolled in a writing intensive course. However the sooner they take the quiz the more quickly they can take advantage of the skills they will acquire.

WHAT ABOUT GRADES?

The test is designed for students to take as many times as necessary until they answer all questions correctly. The results of the test are not intended to affect students’ grades in your class in any way.

HOW DO STUDENTS GET ACCESS TO THE QUIZ?

Students should see a Research Skills for Students class when they log into Moodle. Any student who does not have access should contact a member of the Information Literacy Team (see below). We recommend that you duplicate or email a link to the student instruction page “Writing Intensive Quiz – Instructions for Students".

WHO HAS TAKEN THE QUIZ IN THE PAST?

During the past two academic years the Research Skills quiz has been taken 2,090 times – sometimes as many as three times by the same person. As students have reviewed the answers to missed questions they almost always have learned and improved their comprehension of the skills being taught as reflected by higher test scores in succeeding attempts.
