Wireless & Network Access

Wireless Internet Access

The Smith College Libraries support wireless in Neilson Library (all floors, but access may vary by location), Hillyer Art Library, Josten Performing Arts Library, and Young Science Library.

Smith College Users
Use the Eduroam (encrypted) wireless network. First you must download and install the Eduroam program.

To connect to Eduroam the first time:

  • Select SmithGuest wireless network
  • Enter your email address when prompted
  • Windows users: Open a browser window and go to http://www.smith.edu/eduroam. Follow instructions to download and install Eduroam
  • All: Select Eduroam from the list of wireless networks
  • If prompted for a username, enter your full Smith email address (username@smith.edu)
  • Auditors, NHS students, and others: Enter your Smith-provided username followed by @smith.edu (ex. o-sjones@smith.edu)
  • If prompted for a password, enter your Smith network password
  • In the future, you will be able to connect directly to the Eduroam wireless network while at Smith and at other participating institutions.

Five College Users (and visitors from Eduroam participating institutions)
Use the Eduroam (encrypted) wireless network. First you must download and install the Eduroam program at your home institution.
  • At your home institution, connect to the Eduroam wireless network and download and install the Eduroam program
  • Then at Smith, select the Eduroam wireless network.
  • If prompted for a username, enter your known Eduroam username from your home institution
    • Amherst, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke visitors: Enter your home college email address
    • UMass visitors: Condense your UMass email address to username@umass.edu
  • If prompted for a password, enter your known Eduroam password from your home institution
  • If you haven't first connected to Eduroam and installed the program at your home institution, you may use the SmithGuest network until you've done so. Note: SmithGuest has limited bandwidth and does not provide access to the Smith Libraries' subscription databases.
All Other Users

Select SmithGuest wireless network.

Note: SmithGuest does not provide access to the Smith Network or to the Smith Libraries' subscription databases.  It has limited bandwidth and is meant for temporary use.

  • On the Network Registration page, enter your preferred email address.
  • Read the Acceptable Network usage policy, and click the I Accept button.
  • Follow the instructions on the next page to complete the registration process.

Wireless Printing

Neilson Library offers wireless printing to Windows laptop users on Smith's wireless network from anywhere on campus.

Dataports

  • Patrons are welcome to bring laptops to the Libraries and use electrical outlets.
  • Laptops are also available for loan to Smith students, staff, and faculty at the Neilson Library Circulation desk.
  • Plug-in access to the Smith network and internet is available in several locations for Smith and Five College students. Look for the small black "igloos" or use the top port in the jack on the wall or in a carrel.
Dataport Locations:
Neilson Level 1 - around the perimeter
Hillyer Level 1 - near the carrels around the perimeter
Level 2 - near tables by the elevator
Young All levels - top port in all carrels, and some spots on walls around the perimeter

Call the ITS User Support Center at (413) 585-4487. Wireless network access for Five College users is not currently supported by ITS. The Help Desk does not have the tools necessary to troubleshoot problems from the Smith campus.
