Laptop Loan Terms & Conditions

Eligibility | Borrowing Periods | Returning Laptops | Fines & Liability | Saving Work | Security | Problems/Help

BORROWER ELIGIBILITY

  • Current Smith College students, faculty and staff only.
  • A valid OneCard must be presented. No exceptions!
  • An annual Laptop Loan Agreement must be completed or on file.
  • Abuse of terms and conditions may result in suspension of privileges.

BORROWING PERIODS

  • Loan period: 3 hours. No overnight loans.
  • No grace period for fines. Laptops must be returned by due time.
  • Laptops must be returned 30 minutes before the library closes.
  • One 3 hour renewal can be made online or in person if no other users are waiting for laptops. There will be no telephone renewals.
  • Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations.
  • One laptop per person may be checked out at a time.
  • Laptops may be taken out of the library.

RETURNING LAPTOPS

  • Return laptops directly to a worker at the Circulation desk.
  • DO NOT RETURN LAPTOPS TO THE OUTSIDE or INSIDE BOOK DROPS

FINES AND LIABILITY

  • Overdue fines accrue at $5.00 per hour up to a maximum of $50.00.
  • Do not use the lap top clock to determine time due back; it may not be accurate.
  • A replacement charge of $2,000.00 and non-refundable service fee of $10.00 will be accessed for lost, stolen, permanently damaged or unreturned laptops.
  • Damage/loss of laptops and or peripherals (power supply, cord, cables, drives, battery, hard drive and wireless card) will result in full repair or replacement costs.
    • Case - $50.00 Ethernet Cable - $10.00 A/C Adapter $40.00
    • Battery $160.00 DVD Drive - $250.00 Hard Drive $150.00
  • Smith College and the Libraries are not responsible for damage to personal storage devices or for the loss of any data for any reason during or after the loan period.

SAVING WORK

  • Save your work to a personal storage device or to your personal network space.
  • Do not save anything to the hard drive (C drive). All documents are automatically deleted when the laptop is shut off or restarted.
  • Save your work frequently; battery failure will result in lost work.
  • Check battery levels frequently. Laptops may not always be fully charged when you check them out! (The battery icon is located on the taskbar on the lower right hand corner of the desktop. Place the pointer of the top of the icon and the time left on the battery will appear. )
  • IMPORTANT: printing is not available from laptops. Please save your work and print elsewhere.

SECURITY

  • Do not leave a laptop unattended at any time.
  • Do not loan a checked out laptop to any other user. If the laptop is checked out to you, you are responsible for it.
  • Do not attach other hardware to a laptop, do not install your own software and do not change any system settings.

PROBLEMS/HELP

  • If a laptop does not work, please return it and report the problem to the circulation desk immediately x2910.
  • Library staff can provide very basic support for laptops.
  • Additional hardware and software support is available from the ITS help desk (x4487).
