GETTING STARTED

The Reference Area (Level 1 north) in Neilson Library now supports laptop plug-ins. Look for the small black "igloos" on the index tables along the wall.

Access is permitted for Smith students, faculty and staff with a Novell username and password. A Five College user would be able to connect only if s/he has registered with ITS staff to obtain a Smith College Novell username and password.

Handouts with these detailed instructions are available at the Neilson Library circulation and reference desks.

Printing? Not available via the plug-in connections.

REQUIREMENTS

• A network card in your laptop and an ethernet cable to plug in.
• A Smith College Novell account (available to Smith College faculty, staff, and students and to 5-College students enrolled in a course at Smith)

INTERNET AND NETWORK ACCESS

How to access the Internet [PC and Mac]…

• Plug in your laptop using your ethernet cable
• Click on your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer)
• On the Welcome to Smith's Secure Wireless Network screen (laptop plugins use the same system as the Wireless network), type in your Novell username and password
• Click on Log In
• The Smith homepage will appear in your browser window

How to access the Smith Novell network

PC users:You will need to follow the instructions above before you can access the Smith Network:

• Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop
• Select Netware Login from the pop-up menu
• Enter your Novell username and password in the login box
  

Mac users:

• Smith's Novell network does not currently support IPX or Appletalk
• Use Fetch or another FTP application
