Electronic Classroom | Server Status | Use Policy RESEARCH COMPUTERS Computers in Neilson and the branch libraries provide access to the Five College Library Catalog, electronic indexes and journals, databases and other online resources as well as Moodle and the Internet. Academic work by Smith and Five College patrons takes priority over email, personal and recreational use. Smith Students, Faculty, and Staff: The majority of the computers in the Mair Room in Neilson Library are reserved for current Smith students, faculty, and staff, and require a current Smith Novell login. Five College Users and SC Alumnae: There are six computers at the north end of the Mair Room in Neilson Library which are reserved for students, faculty, and staff from Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, UMass/Amherst, and Smith College alumnae. Users are asked to display a current ID while using these computers. Public Computers: There are five computers just outside the door to the Mair Room on Level 1 Core of Neilson Library which are available to the public. Microsoft Word, Excel and similar applications are not available. For more information, read our Computer Use Policy. Printing: There is a charge of $.05 per page for printing. Smith patrons may use their Smith OneCards; outside guests may purchase a campus cash card in Neilson Library, 1 Core, or in other locations - see Printing FAQ for more information about printing. LAPTOPS Patrons are welcome to bring laptops to the Libraries and use electrical outlets. Network connections are available for users with laptops and a Novell username/password in the Reference Area of Neilson Library (Level 1 north). Look for the small black "igloos" on the index tables along the wall. See Laptop Plug-In for more information. There is also wireless network and internet access in 2 areas of Neilson Library and in each of the branch libraries. Laptops are also available for loan to Smith students, staff, and faculty at the Neilson Library Circulation desk. See Laptop Loan Terms & Conditions for more information. WIRELESS NETWORK ACCESS Most areas in Neilson Library, Hillyer Art Library, Josten Performing Arts Library, and Young Science Library have access to the wireless network. Check Wireless Network Access for details. ACCESS OUTSIDE THE LIBRARIES Almost all electronic resources are available from Smith offices and student houses. Many are also available off-campus, to Smith users, with their GroupWise username and password. See the libraries' Off-campus FAQ for more information. ELECTRONIC CLASSROOM The Smith College Libraries classroom is located on the first floor (north) of Neilson Library. Although its primary purpose is to teach library and electronic resources, it is now available during the fall and spring terms to members of the Smith community as a Library Laboratory. Computers in the Electronic Classroom require a current Smith Novell login. Five College students registering for Smith classes should contact the Smith College ITS User Support Center to apply for network access in order to use the classroom. For more details about availability and access, see the Electronic Classroom page. SMITH SERVER STATUS PAGE For information about problems with campus servers, check the Smith Server Status page.
