Refworks & Library Databases

RefWorks logo helps researchers gather, manage, store, and generate citations and bibliographies. Smith faculty, staff & students have access on the web without charge. Set up a personal login account to begin.

The RefWorks software program provides a number of import filters under References/Import. You can check to see if the filter you need is there:

Instructions for importing references
Find the name of the vendor for the Smith database you are using... Smith databases
See instructions below for each vendor... Database vendors

We have included instructions for databases from major vendors below. Additional databases may or may not allow exporting of citations into RefWorks. If you need further information about a database, please contact your subject liaision in the Libraries.

Citations downloaded into RefWorks may have errors; always check your references after downloading.

Five College Library Catalog

Currently, the Five College Library Catalog does not allow saving citations for import into RefWorks. Until further notice, enter references from the Five College Library Catalog manually using the following instructions. Note: Pop-up blockers must be turned off:

  • Log into RefWorks.
  • From the References menu select Add New Reference.
  • Select a potential output style in the drop-down menu next to View Fields Used By.
  • Under In Folders, select the folder or folders where you want to store your reference. The last folder selected will be displayed, but you can see all your folder choices by clicking on the drop-down menu. If you do not select a folder, the reference is placed in your main database and is considered unfiled.
  • Under Ref Type, select the reference type you want to add.
  • Determine if your reference is for a Print or Electronic source in the Source Type drop-down.
  • After you select the reference type and source type you want to add, click in each field and type the appropriate data.
  • When you've finished entering information, click Save to complete your entry.
  • To add another new reference, select References, Add New Reference from the toolbar.

Or, try this easy workaround... Instead of manually entering references from the online catalog, you may import references automatically using WorldCat:

  • Connect to WorldCat from the Databases by Title list.
