Find Images
Sources for finding images in print and electronic sources, information about evaluating the quality of the images and data about them, and legal considerations for using images in educational settings, in publications and other public presentations.

Vogelsong, Diana. Landscape Architecture Sourcebook: A Guide to Resources on the History and Practice of Landscape Architecture in the United States. Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1997.
Covers all aspects of the discipline--history, theory, and practice, as well as visual, scientific, and social. Lists reference sources, general histories, information on specific types of projects, monographs on designers, periodicals, organizations and other institutional resources. Focus on the United States, but does include historical material about other countries.

Map Resources
Links to a wide variety of online maps and other geographic tools, both current and historical (some resources are available only to members of the Smith College community).

Digital Sanborn Maps [use with IE or Netscape, will not work with Firefox]
Large-scale maps of cities and towns drawn to the scale of 50 feet to an inch. Maps give an "outline of each building, the size and shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, location of windows and doors ... street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Textual information includes construction details, ownership and building use." Smith's subscription covers maps from 1867 to 1970 for cities and towns in Massachusetts, New York, California, the District of Columbia, and Illinois.

Google Earth
Geographic information (down to the level of street addresses) for sites around the globe combining recent satellite imagery, maps, and other data (demographic, economic, commercial).

Five College Library Catalog
The online catalog provides access to the combined library holdings of Smith, Amherst, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

WorldCat
WorldCat is universal in subject scope and includes records for items in all formats held in thousands of libraries throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. It is an excellent source for developing a bibliography and verifying citations. It is updated daily. To request items found in WorldCat through Smith's Interlibrary Loan Service, plan ahead and allow at least two weeks for delivery.

Microform copies and subject indexes (printed, card catalog, online format) to this long-running local newspaper are available for on-site use.

Online version of the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

Holyoke Public Library.
Microfilm copies of Holyoke Transcript (1882 to January 1926), Holyoke Telegram (1912 to 1922), Holyoke Transcript-Telegram (1926 to 1993), Springfield Union News (1993- ).

LexisNexis Academic & LexisNexis Environmental
Provides access to a wide range of local, regional, and national newpapers (through the current day), other news sources, and business, legal, and reference information. Coverage varies by title, but many start around 1985.

Proquest Historical Newspapers and American Periodical Series
Provides the full text, including all editorial and advertising images, of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post (up to the most recent 10 years) and "over 1,100 periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, children's and women's magazines, and many other historically-significant periodicals" as pdf and html files.

Readers Guide Retrospective
Comprehensive indexing of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States and reflecting the history of 20th century America. Covers 1890 to 1982.

Architecture & Design

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
Covers architecture and related fields such as city planning and landscape architecture providing regular access to approximately 1,000 periodicals from the 1930s (with selective coverage dating back to the 1860s) to the present. Updated daily.

Royal Institute of British Architects. British Architectural Library Catalogue
More than 215,000 records from 1986 to the present describing articles in 300 journals and books, drawings, photographs, manuscript and archival materials in the library collection. Covers all aspects of architecture. Abstracts are included for most records.

Other Disciplines

American History and Life
Indexes 1,700 journals, books, and dissertations for material about American and Canadian history. Other subjects covered include popular culture, anthropology, sociology, economics, education, and politics. 1953 to present.

Social Sciences Abstracts
Abstracts of articles published from 1983 to the present from over 550 periodicals. Includes articles, interviews, obituaries, biographies, and book reviews on anthropology, political science, economics, psychology, geography, and sociology. For coverage from 1974 to 1982 consult bound volumes of Social Sciences Index at Neilson Reference AI3.S6.

NORTHAMPTON-AREA LOCAL HISTORY & ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS

Smith College Archives
"The College Archives houses an unusually rich collection of material documenting the history of Smith College from the 1860s to the present."

Forbes Library, Hampshire Room for Local History and Special Collections
"houses extensive resources in local history, genealogy, and a large collection of historic Northampton photographs. Highlights of the Hampshire Room collections include account books and town papers, maps, manuscripts, stereoscopes, the Walter Corbin Collection, Judd Manuscript, Hampshire Gazette negatives, Elbridge Kingsley collection ... and Seth Pomeroy's Journal, which is now available in a digital facsimile edition." Goodwin Memorial Library, Hadley
"Items relating to Hadley's history are currently housed on the upper floor of the library. To make an appointment to view the collection, leave contact information on the Historical Society answering machine (413-587-2623) or call the Library for more information."

Historic Northampton
Provides online bibliographies, virtual exhibitions, other documentation of Northampton and surrounding towns.

Holyoke History Room, Holyoke Public Library.
In addition to newspaper resources, this substantial local history collection includes city directories, public records, photograph and ephemera collections, business archives.

Jones Library, Amherst, Special Collections
"... extensive collections in the fields of local and regional history.... Appointments for conducting research are not necessary but are strongly encouraged."

Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association
Museum and collections documenting the Deerfield area.
