FINDING BOOKS

Five College Catalog - To start your subject search, click on SUBJECT BEGINS WITH and try such search terms as those listed below. Note that the "correct" subject heading isn't always obvious. If a subject search doesn't work, try a keyword search to find a few relevant titles. Then click on the subject headings on those records to conduct a more comprehensive subject search.

Midwives [state]
Midwifery [state]
Maternal health services
Childbirth
Mothers mortality
Women's health services

WorldCat - Use WorldCat to expand your search for books beyond the Five-College area. Watch for items that are owned by only one library: such unique material is often not obtainable via interlibrary loan. If you plan to use interlibrary loan to request books and theses, please allow at least 2 weeks for delivery.

FINDING ARTICLES

Use the databases below to identify articles and essays on your topic.

  • Use the SC Links buttons within the databases below to see if Smith has the article you need either in electronic or print format
  • If you identify an article from another source, use the Journal Locator to locate the article online or in print
  • If you need to use interlibrary loan to requests articles, allow a week or so (though often the articles arrive within days)

Good starting places:

GoogleScholar - Need a few articles? Try this; it covers scholarly materials, with strength in the sciences and medicine. Watch out for non-article sources (websites, etc.). The databases found below will let you search more precisely

Academic OneFile - 1980 to present - Interdisciplinary, scholarly articles

Academic Search Premier - 1960 to present - Interdisciplinary, with coverage of both scholarly and popular articles

Other possibilities:

America: History and Life - 1953 - present - The major database for US/Canadian history

INTERNET RESOURCES

The internet is both a wonderful and perilous resource. Use it, but always with a critical eye. Keep the issues of authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency, and completeness at the forefront as you look at webpages.

Recommended web sites for this class:

Hesperian Foundation - You may download materials from Hesperian’s digital library, especially these two titles: A Book for Midwives and Where There is no Doctor.

American College of Nurse-Midwives

The Farm Midwives

Health in Harmony - An Indonesian NGO that works with rural Indonesian communities to improve the health of people and the natural environment.

Indian Health Service - The federal health program for Native Americans. See especially the page on nurse midwives.

Institute for OneWorld Health - A non-profit pharmaceutical company; its director, Victoria Hale, was just appointed a MacArthur Fellow.

The New York Times - Searchable archives back to 1981. Look for Nicholas Kristof's articles, blogs, etc. You can also view the video about Prudence at this site; see the article, "Prudence's Struggle Ends" from September 24, 2006.

Partners in Health - A non-profit that provides health care for the poor in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe and the United States.

34 Million Friends of UNFPA - A small NGO which helps build grassroot support for the UN Population Fund (organized in response to US decision to not support this work).

United Nations Population Fund - Good information on women's health measures, especially in Africa

White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood - An international coalition of individuals and organizations that promotes public awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe in both developing and developed countries.

World Health Organization - See these pages in particular: Maternal and Perinatal Health and Making Pregnancy Safer.

EVALUATION AND CITING OF SOURCES
  • Remember to cite your souce, when either quoting directly or paraphasing.
  • Cite your source whenever you present an idea that isn't your own.
  • Websites must be cited in your notes/bibliography, too; if you cut and paste--or
paraphrase--from a website, cite the webpage.
  • When in doubt, cite your source.
  • Use this link to connect to online versions of Turabian, MLA Style Guide, etc.:
    Style Manuals & Citation Guides
  • Or use the Landmarks Citation Machine, which offers quick citation help for APA, Chicago, MLA and Turabian style.

For help with your writing, remember the writing services available at the Jacobson Center.
