GETTING STARTED

Art Reference N31.D5 1996 and Groveart.com, the online version
The Dictionary of Art. New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996.
The dictionary does not have a comprehensive survey article about architecture but addresses architecture in sections of more general articles about the arts of civilizations and peoples, countries, cities and towns, and sites; artistic movements and styles; building materials and techniques. Use the index (printed or electronic) for a useful guide to these topics. The dictionary also includes excellent articles on individual architects and designers. Entries for individuals include biographical, critical, and contextual information. Each article is supplemented by a bibliography of major primary and secondary sources.
