GETTING STARTED: REFERENCE TOOLS

The Dictionary of Art. New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996.
Excellent survey articles on the art and architecture of specific countries, regions, cities, cultures including information about major museum and private collections (for example, Native North American Art, Inca, Maya, Aboriginal Australia, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Africa. Also includes articles about individual artists giving biographical, critical, and contextual information. Each article is supplemented by a bibliography of major primary and secondary sources. Groveart.com entries usually include links to good illustrations and other authoritative resources available on the web.
