Helpful research guide explains the types of documents considered primary
sources and where researchers can find both original documents and facsimiles
(microform and digital).

College Archives
The College Archives houses a rich and varied collection of material documenting
the history of the college from the 1860s to the present. The archives
is located on Level A of Alumnae Gym (enter through Neilson Library) and
is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and
on Wednesday from 1 P.M. to 9 P.M.
"The Buildings and Grounds collection focuses on the College's buildings,
both extant and demolished. This collection ... [includes] architectural
information, ownership history, and photographs of the building itself."
Online selections from the Postcard
Collection include digital images of many Smith houses.

Room for Local History and Special Collections
The special collections include "extensive resources in local history,
genealogy, and a large collection of historic Northampton photographs
... account books and town papers, maps, manuscripts, stereoscopes."
The room is open Thursdays from 1 to 5 P.M. and Fridays from 9 to 5 P.M.,
or by appointment (587-1014). Before making a trip, please call ahead
to make sure the archivist is available. Photographic
research is available only by appointment with the Arts &
Music Department (587-1013).
Historic
Northampton
Located at 46 Bridge Street (downtown), Historic Northampton is a local
history museum and three houses [original to Northampton] dating from
the 18th and 19th centuries. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10
A.M. until 4 P.M. and on weekends from Noon until 4 P.M. "The museum's
wide-ranging collection includes more than 10,000 photographs, documents
and manuscripts from the 17th to the 20th centuries, fine art, furniture,
ceramics, glass, metals, toys, tools and implements, and an important
collection of textiles and costumes." Researchers are welcome, but
need to call ahead and make an appointment to use the library and
archival collections.
