SMITH COLLECTIONS & LICENSED RESOURCES

The Image Collections

"The Image Collections are located in the Imaging Center, a facility on the third floor of the Brown Fine Arts Center that supports activities related to the teaching, learning, and research use of images in the Smith community... Among the services provided are: image collection development for teaching, image production, cataloging, licensing of digital content, training, and database management."

The center manages three collections in support of the pedagogical mission of the college: digital images delivered through the Insight system (see section below) and collections of 280,000 slides and 73,000 photographs, color reproductions and other materials documenting art, architecture, and material culture from a wide geographic and cultural range.

Major Image Databases

ARTstor Connect to the ARTstor database
ARTstor is a library of digital images of works of art and other cultural materials, descriptive information about the works recorded in these images, and tools to work with the images and their documentation. ARTstor currently includes about 725,000 digital images ranging from standard art history survey material to specialized collections documenting the design and architecture collections of New York's Museum of Modern Art, works associated with the Buddhist cave shrines in Dunhuang, China, and images documenting the history of women in America from the Schlesinger Library.

INSIGHT Connect to the INSIGHT web site
The Luna Imaging INSIGHT database provides access to over 150,000 images including works of art in all media including digital reproductions of numerous objects from the Mortimer Rare Book Room and the Smith College Museum of Art, 6,500 images of historical maps from the David Rumsey Collection, and more than 8,000 images used for teaching and study from the Department of Art Image Collections. Web access in INSIGHT is available only on the Smith campus. The more powerful JVA software is available on request for members of the Smith community. Other Subscription Databases

Academic Search Premier: Image Collection
The database includes of thousands of current and historic photographs and other images of people, places, and natural science topics--many from the Canadian news press. Select "Images" from the green menu bar.

AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive
Covers 1984s to the present. Current year's photos from the Associated Press photo library and over a million photos dating from the 1840s to the present with text captions.

Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance.
Information on 20,000 Renaissance works of art documenting 10,000 antique monuments illustrated by 30,000 photographs. Links Renaissance sources with the antique works they document, their locations, dates, names, and modern bibliographical citations.

Dictionary of National Biography
10,000 portraits in all media are included in this standard reference source for British biography. Images can be searched by sitter, artist, date, location of the portrait, and copyright holder. Biographies also includes lists of other portraits of the subject.

Oxford Art Online
Provides access to 45,000 digital images from museum, gallery, and other art websites through links from articles as well as a special image-only search.

Index of Christian Art
Documents 60,000 works of art in all media produced from apostolic times through the 15th century with Christian themes or for ecclesiastical settings. Entries give bibliographies, scholarly commentaries, and images (over 100,000 are included in the database).

Smith Online Collections

Smith College Archives. Digitized Collections and Image Gallery.
The most image-rich collections are The Senda Berenson Papers which includes approximately 60 photographs of Berenson (1868-1954) and the Postcard Collection, "an artificial collection of over 800 unique postcards [published from 1900 to 1995] depicting Smith College campus buildings, interiors, and events as well as views of the greater Northampton area."

Smith College Museum of Art. Permanent Collection.
Highlights of the collection including paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Five College Museum/Historic Deerfield Database includes thumbnail images of many other works in the SCMA and other Five College collections.

Sophia Smith Collection.
Images are used throughout the website including the Collections page, online exhibits and lesson plans.

Academically oriented digital resources harvested from educational and research institutions, national libraries, and other organizations. Select "limit by resource type: image"

Collect Britain. British Library.
More than 90,000 digital images of maps, prints and drawings, photographs, and other documents, and rare early sound recordings from around the globe.

American Memory. Library of Congress.
A "gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections." Use the Collection Finder to access the collection by broad subject, date, place, or material format.


Digital Collections. University of California, Berkeley. Sunsite.
Covers a broad range of disciplines and document types from aerial photography to medieval manuscripts.

Gallica. Bibliotheque National de France.
Over 90,000 digital images of photographs, prints, drawings, maps, manuscripts, books, and other materials documenting the history and culture of France.

The Open Video Project. Interaction Design Laboratory, School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A collection of about 4,000 videos from about 20 collections. Many subjects are covered; videos are black-and-white and color, sound and silent.

NYPL Digital. New York Public Library.
"NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 600,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more." (now includes the Picture Collection Online).

Picture Australia. National Library of Australia.
Search engine for Australia-related images of "people, places and events in the collections of libraries, museums, galleries, archives, universities and other cultural agencies, in Australia and abroad." Includes works of art in all media, contemporary news and historical photos, historical objects and printed materials.
