WHAT IS ARTstor?

ARTstor is a library of digital images of works of art and other cultural materials, descriptive information about the works recorded in these images, and tools to work with the images and their documentation. ARTstor is a nonprofit initiative of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation "to enable the use of digital technology to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the visual arts and associated fields."
More about ARTstor and its origins

ARTstor currently includes about 300,00 digital images ranging from standard art history survey material to specialized collections documenting the design and architecture collections of New York's Museum of Modern Art, works associated with the Buddhist cave shrines in Dunhuang, China, the "Illustrated Bartsch" (a collection of European Old Master prints), and the Carnegie Arts of the United States project.

USING ARTstor

ARTstor may be used only for "non-commercial pedagogical and scholarly purposes" such as general reference, classroom presentations, course reserves, study materials, and student papers.

ARTstor's web-based interface allows registered users to search collections, examine works, create and save groups of images for personal or instructional use, and print or download images and their documentation. Only Smith students, faculty, and staff may register for access to the full range of ARTstor tools. Use by those unaffiliated with Smith College is restricted to searching and browsing ARTstor collections.

Technical Requirements

ARTstor is supported on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac OSX platforms. It requires Netscape 6.2 and above or Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and above (IE 6.x is recommended). Monitors should be set to 1024 x 768 resolution or higher. Workstations should have a miniumum of 64MB of RAM (128 MB or higher is recommended).

Additional software requirements:

  • Flash Player 6 or above (Download Flash Player)
  • JAVA 1.4 or above (Users of Netscape 6.2 and above and Mozilla 1.2 and above should download the Java Runtime Environment)
  • Popup blocking software must be disabled
  • Cookies must be enabled
