Friday, November 7, 2008 at 7 pm
Sophia Smith Collection, Alumnae Gym

A memoir of a young midwife practicing in the wilds of New Hampshire who trained with a wonderful old country doctor, fell in love with her obstetrician back-up, and ultimately became a national leader in the struggle to reclaim the profession of midwifery in the United States. A story of love, loss and deep dedication to birthing women.

About the author: Carol Leonard is a foremother of the modern midwifery movement. She is a NH Certified Midwife and has been practicing for the last three decades. She has delivered approximaterly 1,200 babies safely in their own homes.

Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart, A Midwife's Saga is available from Bad Beaver Publishing.

Cover of Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart

"A midwife should have a lady's hands, a hawk's eyes and a lion's heart" ~ Aristotle    (Leonard means "lion heart")

"Carol Leonard's memoir of becoming a midwife in New Hampshire during the mid-1970s overflows with her gifts as a storyteller as well as intuitive midwife. Inspiring, often hilarious, always touching and full of beans, she takes us through her apprenticeship, the politics of the U.S. midwifery movement and her own personal story of love, loss and deep dedication to women's health. She's my kind of midwife!"
— Ina May Gaskin, author of Spiritual Midwifery

Carol Leonard's Papers and the Midwives Alliance of North America Records are part of the SSC.
