Leslie Stephen Stephen

Leslie Stephen, who is holding an alpenstock in this picture, became a member of the newly formed Alpine Club at Cambridge of which he remained a member until death: “I could walk and run long distances.” In 1879, Stephen founded the Sunday Tramps, a hiking club with his friends Frederic W. Maitland and Sir Frederick Pollock.
