Andrews, George F. 1975. Maya Cities: Placemaking and Urbanization. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press.

This book discusses Maya city planning, both individual buildings and city layouts. In addition to a general overview, it gives very good analyses of many individual Maya cities, discussing variations as well as similarities in building styles and plans. Many black-white photos and plans. [Plate 8]

Includes Catherwood’s illustrations, giving general descriptions, as well as Catherwood’s impressions of them. The book also questions whether Western interpretations of the ancient Maya are more romantic than scholarly. [Plates 4, 20, 22]

Portrays modern Maya as they attempt to make their own meaning of their ancestry, whether benefiting from or virtually denying it. Well written, engaging account. Pages 1-30 relevant for opinions about the contemporary versus classical Maya. [Plate 18]

Also gives information on each plate’s composition, the process of publishing them, and his artistic technique. Editor has included biography of Catherwood and a history of his prints and books.. This book focuses on the interpretation of Maya hieroglyphs, with a good deal of cultural and historical information about pre-Columbian civilizations. Includes a brief mention of Catherwood’s detailed style, noting with admiration the artist’s skill, and acknowledging the potential usefulness of Catherwood’s drawings. [Plate 3]

Evans, R. Tripp. 2004. Romancing the Maya: Mexican Antiquity in the American Imagination. Austin: University of Texas Press.

This book discusses the importance of Mexican antiquity in the Western (specifically American) imagination. Includes chapters about specific archaeologists and their findings, attitudes and cultural context (including Stephens and Catherwood). Tone is neither overly scholarly or overly romantic, with a general bias in favor of the rights of indigenous peoples. A fair number of black-white illustrations, including many of Catherwood’s works. [Plates 6, 16]

This book addresses the Maya generally, but also the city of Kabah and the what Catherwood shows in the background of plate 16. Although dated, text goes into detail about structures such as the Codz-Poop (Palace of Masks), the Arch, as well as Kabah's pyramids, and its palaces. [Plate 16]

This text addresses the struggles of the Maya people, from conquest to present day. Discusses the difference between self-identification and identity as it relates to contemporary Maya. Also gives an excellent idea of the metamorphosis of the Maya culture over time. Pages 90-101 particularly useful on ethnic discourse and what it means to be a contemporary descendant of the ancient Maya. [Plate 18]

This is an easy to read, yet detailed book on different printing techniques. Gives black-white and color photos, with details so one can see the surfaces of different types of prints. Also discusses various ways to see how distinct printing techniques differ from each other. [Plate 2]

Extensive bibliography, though sources are prior to 1980’ s. Nice passages about the conquistadors’ reactions to Tulum, and about the general function of, and iconography at the site. [Plates 18, 19, 23]

Focusing on the architecture of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, this text is divided by time period (Pre-Classic, Classic, Post-Classic) and region, with subsections for each specific place. Extensive use of black and white photographs and line drawings. Traces the evolution of artwork and architecture and how it relates to the culture of each civilization. Includes timeline of developments in art and architecture. Very readable for a person who has minimal knowledge of architecture. [Plates 7 top, 7 bottom, 17]

An overview of ancient Maya ruins. The section on Uxmal is short, but it provides good information on the construction of the House of the Dwarf, and the Governor’s House and its decoration (including such symbols as Chac masks, serpent designs, stepped frets, and latticework). [Plates 10, 12]

Easy to read, with a personal and engaging tone, yet clearly very well-researched. Brief account of the work of Stephens and Catherwood can be found on pages 12-15. [Plates 1, 6, 17, 21]

Includes chapters on the court at Palenque, as well as essays by prominent scholars on artists and writing, courtly dress, artistic techniques and recent archaeological discoveries. Good sense of the culture that produced monuments like those Catherwood depicted from Copán and Palenque. Excellent color photographs; current bibliography and useful glossary. [Plate 21]

Proskouriakoff, a famous Maya scholar, and author of the landmark book A Study Classic Maya Sculpture (1950), played an important part in the decipherment of Maya glyphs and was noted for her drawings of ancient Maya sites. This book provides an overview of specific buildings in several important Maya archaeological sites. Information about the sites themselves as well as the architectural importance of individual structures. Black-white photos and line drawing. [Plate 6]

This scholarly book on the findings at Palenque was written by one of the best-known European scholars of Mesoamerica in the early 20th century. Interesting information (although now dated), with many images, including photographs, maps and drawings of glyphs or carvings. No bibliography, but references appear in the notes. Since this is a translation from German, many of the referenced sources are not English. [Plate 7 top, 7 bottom]

Original travel account of the Stephens and Catherwood expedition to Central America. Stephens writes about his encounters with indigenous people and the work that went into bringing knowledge of the ruins to the western world. A good source on the situations Stephens and Catherwood encountered day by day, and on Catherwood’s working method. Included are Catherwood’s drawings of the monuments studied during the expedition. [Plates 2, 11, 12, 15, 19, 22, 24, 25]
