Hillyer Art Library Study Carrels & Shelves
Reserving a Carrel
- Hillyer Art Library carrels may be reserved only by Smith College students.
- Carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is given to thesis students, honor students, and seniors.
- Carrels must be reserved in-person at the art library service desk. Students must present a valid Smith ID to reserve a carrel.
- Carrel reservations are for the entire semester and must be renewed at the beginning of each semeter.
Reserving a Patron Shelf
- All art library patrons may register for a shelf to serve as a personal reserve space. Patron shelves are on the cellar level of the art library.
- Monographic items that don't circulate outside the library may be checked out to patron shelves.
- Shelf reservations are for the entire semester and must be renewed at the beginning of each semeter.
Circulation
- All items placed on carrels and patron shelves must be checked out at the art library service desk.
- When an item is checked out, art library staff will flag it with a colored streamer. This streamer must be kept in the item until it is returned.
- Items that do not have colored streamers will be removed from carrels and shelves and returned to the stacks.
- Items on loan to carrels may be recalled for reserve or use by other patrons. Carrel patron will receive email notification of the new due date.
Loan Periods
- Books are loaned to carrels for 1 semester.
- Bound periodicals cannot be loaned to carrels.
- Current periodicals cannot be loaned to carrels.
