There are a number of initiatives in place to educate the Smith community about the importance of handling library materials safely.

Informative bookmarks and a sheet of book care and handling tips are available at circulation desks on a regular basis.

An engaging exhibit of damaged books entitled "Our Books Are In Your Hands" has been mounted in both Neilson Library and Young Science Library on several occasions.

The "Book Care Road Show", an interactive workshop for library staff, has been presented to teach staff about the safe care and handling of library materials.

Other events have included preservation awareness week, book repair demonstrations, and a showing of preservation videos available through the Five-College Library system.
