Smith Libraries Mourn the Loss of Lory Wallfisch

We note with sadness the passing of Lory Wallfisch, Iva Dee Hiatt professor emerita of music, on September 18, 2011.

Lory Wallfisch, April 21, 1922 - September 18, 2011

Lory’s career as a teacher, concert pianist and scholar lasted her lifetime and inspires our continuing respect and gratitude. Lory was the pianist and harpsichordist of the internationally acclaimed Wallfisch Duo with her husband, Ernst Wallfisch, viola, until his death in 1979. Yehudi Menuhin heard them perform in Bucharest in 1946 and subsequently helped them emigrate to the United States.

book cover Masterworks of George EnescuLory joined the Smith College faculty in 1964 with her husband. After she retired from the college in 1992, she continued her international concert and teaching career and last year completed a labor of love: a translation into English of Pascal Bentoiu’s analysis of the masterworks of George Enescu, published by Scarecrow Press. A gifted teacher, deeply musical pianist, and devoted champion of Enescu, whom she knew personally, Lory will be remembered for her passionate embrace of a musical life.
