By contributing annually, Friends ensure a flexible source of income for the Libraries. This income funds acquisitions, furnishings and equipment, electronic resources, staff development opportunities, and builds endowments in areas of long term need. Friends also make donations to endowed and special funds, or contribute books, CD’s, manuscripts and other materials. In doing so, they enrich the collections of the Smith College Libraries & Special Collections.

An executive committee of alumnae advises the director on the allocation of Friends' funds, proposes special projects benefiting the libraries, and plans events to interest the community.
