Change America Conference
September
10 - 11, 2004, various venues, Smith College.
Join noted authors, historians, educators, activists and others interested
in promoting and celebrating women's historic accomplishments at the Women
Change America inaugural conference of the National Women's History Project

Poets Annie Boutelle, Celia Gilbert, Susan Snively and Eleanor Wilner
will read from their work in this celebration of the ELM Press. After
the reading, curator of rare books Martin Antonetti will interview Enid
Mark about her work, and the creative process that produces books renowned
for their seamless fusion of finely printed text and Mark’s seductive
lithographs. A reception and viewing of the companion exhibit will follow
in the Book Arts Gallery on the 3rd floor. For more information about

"Radical
Harmonies"
Saturday, February 14, 3:00 P.M., Sweeney Concert Hall, Sage
Hall.
A documentary by Academy Award nominee Dee Mosbacher about the women's
cultural movement of the 1970s and '80s that exploded gender barriers
in music. A discussion will follow with featured performers June and Jean
Millington, Toshi Reagon, Ferron, Judith Casselberry, Bitch and Animal.

Library, Level 3.
An invitational show curated by Carol J. Blinn, proprietor of Warwick
Press, Easthampton, Massachusetts. The exhibition features printing, books,
and ephemera "made by hand, made by machine, made with humor and
passion" by thirty-seven women printers. SPONSORED BY THE MORTIMER

"Shakespeare
and the Outer Isles: Macbeth and Barbarous Scotland"
Wednesday, March 3 at 4:30 P.M., Neilson Browsing Room.
A distinguished literary critic and scholar, Paul Alpers has written extensively
on Edmund Spenser and is the author of The Poetry of the Faerie Queene
(Princeton University Press, 1967). He has also written about poetry of
the European Renaissance and about Latin poetry, most notably in The Singer
of the Eclogues: A Study of Virgilian Pastoral (University of California
Press, 1979). Dr. Alpers' most recent book is What Is Pastoral? (University

Press Books: Making Art a Business"
Friday, April 2, at 2:00 P.M, Neilson Browsing Room.
This year's annual meeting of the Friends of the Libraries will take a
look at the Connecticut River Valley's thriving cottage industry in the
book arts, with a specific focus on women making a business from their
art. The panel discussion will feature Carol Blinn of the Warwick Press;
Barbara Blumenthal '75, bookbinder and owner of the Catawba Press; Karen
Pava Randall of the Propolis Press; and Julia Ferrari of the Golgonooza
Letter Foundry and Trois Fontaines Press. A reception will follow. SPONSORED

To mark the installation of two exhibits honoring Elliot Offner's career
at Smith College:

This exhibition will include letterpress works printed by students of
Professor Offner.

Commencement Reception
Saturday, May 15, at 2:30 P.M., Mortimer Rare Book Room.
This annual event honors graduating seniors who have worked in the libraries,
and welcomes returning alumnae and their guests.

Collections Tour
Saturday, May 22, at 2:00 P.M., meets at the Neilson Library
Circulation Desk
As part of reunion weekend activities, the Friends will host a tour of
the Mortimer Rare Book Room, the Smith College Archives and the Sophia
Smith Collection. This is a special opportunity to learn about the collections
and view artifacts and exhibits. A reception will follow in the Alumnae
Gymnasium, Level A at 3:30 P.M.
