To:
The Faculty Dear Faculty, The Five College Libraries all face challenges in housing growing book and journal collections. To address this mutual problem, the Directors of Five Colleges, Inc. created the Five College Library Depository, a shared storage facility. Over the past two years, collection development librarians met with faculty departmental representatives to explore the issues in choosing appropriate materials for remote storage and providing a high-quality document delivery service. Planning activities for the Depository are now gaining momentum. A policy document describing the Depository program was approved in March by the Five College Librarians Council and can be viewed at http://www.smith.edu/libraries/depository/policy.htm. A planning team of librarians was created in April to work out the details of the Depository operation and we are in the process of hiring a manager. The Depository should be ready to accept materials in the fall. The next phase of the project for Smith is to start identifying materials that we will be moving to the Depository. We will be transferring 75,000 volumes to the Depository over the next few years. The focus of our effort will be to transfer little used journals and journals for which there is reliable, high quality electronic copy. The Smith Libraries, Neilson, Hillyer, Josten and Young, face acute shortages of shelf space and we will need to move materials from all of our collections. As a first step, titles that are part of the JSTOR project will be transferred. Complete backruns of these titles are available online to members of the Five Colleges community from campus and remotely. In this first stage, we will move only volumes published prior to 1980. A list of these titles can be found at http://www.smith.edu/libraries/depository/2003journals.htm. If you have any questions or concerns about these titles, please feel free to contact your library liaison, Mia Brazill, Coordinator of Collection Development, or me. Although we would all prefer to expand our capacity, the college is faced with the realities of limited space on campus and the very high expense of adding library space. We believe the judicious use of the Depository for remote storage is the best solution to our space problems for now. We look forward to working with you on its implementation. For
