Second-Year Program

2016 Program

January 4-15, 2016

About the Program

In the second year of the program, students investigate more deeply their own personal leadership style, developing their abilities in group work. Participants shadow a local leader for an afternoon, strategically plan their own futures, and reflect on experiences with internships. Students will engage with a local nonprofit agency to form a strategic development plan, working in teams as organizational consultants to assess the organization and make recommendations to it, developing their skills in strategic assessment, understanding organizational dynamics and culture, writing, and presentation.

The Lewis Leadership Program is an intense learning experience. The program, which began 21 years ago, has teamed students with the Friends of the Homeless cot shelter, Academy of Music, Friends of Children, Northampton Center for the Arts, Smith’s Center for Women and Financial Independence, the Lewis Global Studies Center at Smith, and other organizations.

Between the two interterm sessions, participants are encouraged to apply what they learn in summer internships. LLP participants have held internships at the National Institutes of Health and the White House, as well as in homeless shelters, art museums and newspapers.

Best of all, the combination of training in practical leadership skills and contributing to the local community left these students with a feeling that their work had made an important difference.
