First-Year Program

2016 Program

January 4-15, 2016

About the Program

During the first year, students will participate in intensive leadership development sessions followed by the opportunity to engage with the Smith community in the review of a Smith initiative. The two weeks focus on leadership skill development, group dynamics and understanding the student's strengths in working within groups. Students work with Smith faculty who are specialists in leadership, group dynamics, and organizational processes, and with outside experts in public presentation, negotiation and mediation, and other areas. The sessions are hands-on and highly engaging.

Lewis Leadership students have developed and presented recommendations on issues at Smith including the smoking policy, relations between Smith and the city of Northampton, Smith's Convocation, and many others. Students' presentations are attended by decision-makers at Smith and recommendations are often implemented.
