The Department of Education and Child Study at Smith College offers men and women two graduate degree programs: a master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.), with or without teacher licensure, and a master of education of the deaf (M.E.D.).
Education and the study of learning touch every aspect of human activity. At the Smith College Department of Education and Child Study, we believe teaching and the study of how people learn are central to the health and future of our rapidly changing and diverse society.
Since 1871, Smith College has been preparing teachers and educational leaders who understand what it takes to create classrooms where students learn to engage their world critically, imaginatively, and reflectively. Our alumni, faculty, and students work on one of the most pressing social and human questions of our time: How can educators create settings where all children can learn and flourish?
The master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) program (one summer session followed by a full academic year) is designed for students who are planning to teach in elementary, middle, or high schools and those wishing to do advanced study in the field of education. The M.A.T. program combines study in the field of the student's academic interest—the specific teaching field for students preparing to teach at the secondary or middle school levels and broader liberal arts and sciences subjects for students preparing to teach at the elementary level—with experience in teaching and the study of educational theory.
We offer competitive graduate fellowships for those students who want to work as Project Coach mentors/supervisors while pursuing the M.A.T. Founded in 2002, Project Coach is an outreach organization rooted in the North End community of Springfield, MA. Project Coach's mission is to bridge economic, educational, and social divisions facing Springfield's youth. Since its inception, Project Coach has trained, mentored, and coached almost 100 high school coaches, who have in turn led 1000+ young student athletes in organized sports leagues across five different schools. At the heart of its organizational team are Smith College faculty, graduate student fellows, and undergraduates, along with local public school teachers.
