The Smith College community has responded,
and will continue to respond, to the devastating effects and tragic aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina. We were pleased to welcome into our community seven students
from colleges in the affected area, who were guests of Smith for the fall
semester.
Jennifer Walters, dean of religious life, is coordinating
student, staff, faculty and college-wide response and relief efforts. The community
is encouraged to contact her with initiatives and resources. She will work with
others on campus to help bring ideas to fruition.
In response to the devastating effects
and tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Smith College is instituting a temporary
policy granting employees a paid leave of up to one week for an employee to
participate in recognized hurricane relief efforts. The policy is effective

a nationwide effort to supply children affected by Hurricane Katrina with backpacks

much of the Gulf Coast, a panel of Smith College faculty analyzed the multiple
forces that contributed to the rapid deterioration of the affected areas, New Orleans

"In the Wake of Katrina: An All-College
Gathering of Remembrance, Prayer and Action" was held Thursday, September 8
on Chapin Lawn, and was led by Jennifer Walters, dean of religious
life. All were welcome to bring a poem or prayer to offer.
In support of colleges and universities stricken
by Hurricane Katrina, Smith College is offering undergraduates from western Massachusetts
the opportunity to take fall semester classes at Smith. More...
Smith's athletics department seeks donations
of school supplies to send to victims of the hurricane. Donation boxes are located
in Ainsworth Gym at the equipment booth, on the second floor near the athletics
offices, and at the entrance of Scott Gym.
