The projects below are examples of the Smith College community's work in a range of media. The gallery is intended to act as a catalyst for faculty, students and staff to help generate ideas for using digital media and developing teaching tools.






Learning Engineering Mechanics Through Video Production
Dr. Glenn Ellis, EGR 270 (Continuum Mechanics I)

Type:  Video Production

Objective:
Each student works in a production team to produce a two- to three-minute educational video investigating a combined translational/rotational motion.






Northampton Silk Project
Dr. Marjorie Senechal, History of Science and Technology Program

Type: 
Interactive

Objective:
To develop an interactive website highlighting the findings of the Northampton Silk Project, a six-year, community-wide effort to uncover, understand and convey the story of Northampton's 100 year long silk industry (1830s - 1930s) and its place in the history of silk throughout the world.




Changing the Culture of Coaching for Women
Chris Shelton, ESS 550 (Women and Sport)

Type:  Presentation

Objective:
To develop a visual component for a discussion on women's leadership in sport and an analysis of why women leave coaching.



Thinking With A Line
Cathy Topal, Campus School

Type:  Interactive

Objective: Thinking With A Line is an interactive CD-ROM Program designed to help elementary school teachers feel comfortable with art materials and to demonstrate a variety of strategies for using materials to foster, extend and deepen understanding.



Vistas
Dr. Dana Leibsohn, Art Department

Type:  Interactive

Objective: The Vistas project illustrates colonial-era Spanish America, an extensive region that covered much of the Americas, running from California to Chile from the 16th century to the early 19th century. The project's website provides a selection of primary sources, a gallery of more than 70 color images, interpretive essays, and a searchable bibliography on visual culture.



Tradition Unbound: Southeast Asian Painters at Work
Dr. Anna Sloan, Art Department

Type:  Video

Objective
: To produce a documentary tracing the development and evolution of miniature paining in India and Pakistan.
