WINDOWS XP UPGRADE FAQS

Why is ITS concerned about Windows XP?

Microsoft will stop all support for the Windows XP operating system as of April 8, 2014. This will make any computer running Windows XP extremely vulnerable to viruses and other malware. The industry expects hackers to launch attacks against the system almost immediately upon the date of support withdrawal. Beyond impacting just one user, an infected machine has the ability to launch outgoing attacks that can compromise the performance of our data network for all users.

Coming near the end of the spring semester, this threat has the potential to be particularly disruptive. Due to these significant security risks, any computer running Windows XP after March 31st will be blocked from the Smith network.

What is being done to address the problem?

ITS is developing an upgrade schedule for all Smith-owned computers that are running Windows XP, and will soon be contacting users regarding their upgrades. Any Windows XP computers in use on campus that are not part of the ITS upgrade schedule will need to be upgraded at department expense or taken out of service (disconnected from the network). ITS plans is to use the next two months to insure that the campus network is protected from any potential security breach and prevent a disruption to work on campus that could be devastating.

How can I tell which version of Windows I have on my Dell desktop or laptop?

  1. Right-click on the Computer or My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. The Properties window will display the installed version of Windows.

My computer is running Windows XP. Can it be upgraded to Windows 7?

The answer depends on the specific Dell desktop or laptop model you have, the amount of RAM it currently has, and whether additional RAM chips can be installed if needed. Windows 7 requires a minimum 4GB of RAM to run properly.
