Installing and Using ZTerm on Your Off-Campus Mac
For off-campus access to a command-line e-mail server (Sophia or AIS), you can use a modem-equipped Macintosh and ZTerm. These instructions explain how to install and use ZTerm on your off-campus Macintosh.
Obtaining ZTerm
You can obtain a ZTerm installation floppy at the Computer Store, Stoddard Hall 22, between 8:30 am and 4 pm M-F. There is a $1.00 charge for the floppy.
Installing ZTerm
- Make sure that your modem is correctly connected to both your Mac and your phone line, that the modem is turned on, and that any software needed by the modem has been installed. For help with this, consult the documentation that came with the modem.
- Insert the ZTerm floppy into the floppy drive. After it's been mounted on your Desktop, double-click on its icon to open it.
- In the ZTerm floppy's window, you will see a folder labeled "ZTerm_1.0.1". Drag this folder onto your hard drive icon.
- Eject the ZTerm floppy by dragging its icon into the Trash.
Using ZTerm
- Open your hard drive and locate the ZTerm_1.0.1 folder; open this folder.
- Inside this folder, you will see a Z-shaped icon labeled "ZTerm 1.0.1". This is the ZTerm program; double-click on it to launch it.
- Once ZTerm is open, pull down its Dial menu and select the phone number that fits your circumstances. In the Northampton dialing area, use 585-3760. To dial up long distance, use 1-413-585-3760. To dial up long distance from a phone that requires a predial (such as a hotel), use 9-1-413-585-3760 or 8-1-413-585-3760.
Note: Dialup requires analog service (a signal that travels as waves) rather than digital (a signal that travels as 1s and 0s). Long-distance dialup is regular long-distance dialing with a toll charge.
- Your modem dials the number selected, and connects to Smith's modem pool. You will see "connect [number]" in the ZTerm window once you're connected.
- Once you're connected, press Return. This will cause the prompt "You may now enter commands >>" to appear.
- At this prompt, type connect mailserver
Example: connect sophia
- You will then see the usual prompt for the mailserver. From this point on, you can use the mailserver just as you do on campus.
- When you're done, quit from the email program (e.g. Pine), then log out. This will put you back at the "You may now enter commands >>" prompt.
- Type logout and press Return to disconnect.
- Pull down the File menu and select Quit to leave ZTerm.
If You Have Call Waiting
If you have Call Waiting on your phone line (check your phone bill or contact your phone company if you're not sure about this):
- In ZTerm, pull down the Settings menu and select Connection.
- In the Phone Number field, add "*70," in front of the phone number, so that it looks like this: *70,585-3760
- Click OK, then pull down the File menu and select Quit.
- When asked if you want to save the preferences for Smith dialup setup, click Yes.
