Installing PowerTerm

The instructions below explain how to install PowerTerm for Windows in on- and off-campus computers.

Windows 95/98 Installation

If you are connected to a campus file server, you can install PowerTerm directly from the network. For off-campus machines, see Making Your Own PowerTerm Diskettes, below.

Installing PowerTerm On-Campus from the Network

  1. Make sure you are logged into the network as usual.
  2. Click on Start, then choose Run.
  3. In the Open: dialog box, type:
    k:\tools\pterm32\oncamp\install

    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: You can also use the Explorer to run the Install file from K:\tools\pterm32\oncamp.

The installation adds a PowerTerm shortcut to the Internet Tools folder. If you don''t see the shortcut, you can add one to your desktop:

  1. Right-click on a "blank" spot on the desktop.
  2. Choose New, then Shortcut.
  3. In the Command line box, type:
    K:\tools\pterm32\ptw32.exe

    then click Next.
  4. Type in PowerTerm for the name and click Finish.
  5. Right-click on the new icon and choose Properties.
  6. Click on the Shortcut tab, and change the Start in directory to read C:\pterm32
  7. Click OK.

Installing PowerTerm Off-Campus from a Floppy Disk

  1. Insert the floppy disk into your disk drive. If you are installing from low density (DD) disks, insert PowerTerm Disk.
  2. Click on Start, then choose Run.
  3. In the Open: dialog box, type: a:\install
    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: You can also use the Explorer to run the Install file from A:.

If you are installing from low density (DD) disks, follow the prompts to remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The installation adds a PowerTerm shortcut to the Programs folder under the Start menu. If you don't see the shortcut, you can add one to your desktop:

  1. Right-click on a "blank" spot on the desktop.
  2. Choose New, then Shortcut.
  3. In the Command line box, type: C:\pterm32\ptw32.exe
    then click Next.
  4. Type in PowerTerm for the name and click Finish.

To complete the installation, you must check the modem settings. See Completing the Off-Campus Installation, below. 


Windows 3.1 Installation

If you are connected to a campus file server, you can install PowerTerm directly from the server. For off-campus machines, see Making Your Own PowerTerm Diskettes, below.

Installing PowerTerm On-Campus From the File Server

  1. Make sure you are logged into the file server, as usual.
  2. In the Program Manager, choose File, then Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type: k:\tools\pterm16\oncamp\install.bat
    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The installation copies a PowerTerm group to your Windows directory. To add this group:

  1. Click on File in the Program Manager, then choose New.
  2. Click on Program Group.
  3. For Description, type: PowerTerm
  4. For Group File, type: powerter.grp

To complete the installation, you must check the modem settings. See Completing the Off-Campus Installation, below.

Installing PowerTerm Off-Campus from a Floppy Disk

  1. Insert the floppy disk into your disk drive. If you are installing from low density (DD) disks, insert PowerTerm Disk 1.
  2. In the Program Manager, choose File, then Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type: a:\install
    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are installing from low density (DD) disks, follow the prompts to remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The installation copies a PowerTerm group to your Windows directory. To add this group:

  1. Click on File in the Program Manager, then choose New.
  2. Click on Program Group.
  3. For Description, type: PowerTerm
  4. For Group File, type: powerter.grp

To complete the installation, you must check the modem settings. See Completing the Off-Campus Installation, below.


Completing the Off-Campus Installation

This section applies only to off-campus users of PowerTerm.

  1. In the PowerTerm menu bar, click on Communication.
  2. Click on Connect.
  3. Click on a Dialin option (Banner keyboard or general) from the Sessions List (at bottom of window).
  4. Check the modem settings in the Parameters Box upper right corner. You may need to adjust the Port number and the Baud Rate.

The Baud Rate should match the speed of your modem. If not, change it using the pulldown box. If your modem speed is not listed, choose the next higher speed.
The Port refers to the number of the com port your modem is using. Change it if necessary.

NOTE: If you''re not sure what port number to use, try 1 first; if the modem doesn't respond, change to 2 and try again.

  1. Click Modify. This saves the settings.
  2. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each Dialin option you will be using.
  3. Make sure the correct Dialin option is selected and click Connect
  4. Log on as usual.


Making Your Own PowerTerm Diskettes
If you log into a file server on campus, you can make your own copy of PowerTerm on one high-density diskette or two double-density ("low" density) diskettes.

Windows 95 High Density

  1. Put a NEW high density disk into your disk drive.
  2. Click on Start, then choose Run.
  3. In the Open: dialog box, type:
    k:\tools\pterm32\makedisk\makehd

    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Windows 95 Double (low) Density

You need two double (low) density diskettes for this installation.

  1. Put a NEW double density disk into your disk drive.
  2. Click on Start, then choose Run.
  3. In the Open: dialog box, type
    k:\tools\pterm32\makedisk\makeld

    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. When prompted, remove the first diskette, label it, and insert the second NEW diskette.

Windows 3.1 High Density

  1. Put a NEW high density disk into your disk drive.
  2. Click on File, then choose Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type: 
    k:\tools\pterm16\makedisk\makehd

    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Windows 3.1 Double (Low) Density

You need two double (low) density diskettes for this installation.

  1. Put a NEW double density disk into your disk drive.
  2. Click on File, then choose Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type:
    k:\tools\pterm16\makedisk\makeld

    and click OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. When prompted, remove the first diskette, label it, and insert the second NEW diskette.
