CONNECTING TO THE SMITH RESIDENCE NETWORK

The instructions below explain how to connect your Windows computer, Macintosh computer, or portable computing device (cell phone, iPad, etc.) to the Smith residence network (ResNet). Note that you will be asked to complete the network registration process for each computer and device every semester.


1. Preferred Access Method

  1. Alway try to connect to the Smith wireless network (SmiFi or WiSmi) if possible.

  2. If you can't connect wirelessly, connect one end of your Ethernet cable to your computer and the other end to the Ethernet port in your room, then try using the wired connection.


2. Network Registration


All students will be prompted to complete a simple network registration process at the beginning of each semester, as follows:

  1. Connect to the Smith network using a wireless connection or an Ethernet cable.

  2. Open a browser window; the Network Registration page will appear.




  3. Enter your Novell username and password.

  4. Read the Acceptable Network Usage policy, then click on the I Accept button.

  5. Follow the instructions on the next web page to complete the registration process.

After that, you will be able to connect directly to the Internet without any login.

Returning students: If you still have the Cisco Clean Access agent installed on your computer, please un-install it.



3. McAfee VirusScan Strongly Recommended But Not Required


Anti-virus software is as important as ever and students are still responsible for ensuring that their computers are protected. To that end, Smith provides free copies of McAfee VirusScan for Mac or Windows to all Smith students.

However, since many computers now come with anti-virus software pre-installed, students may choose to use a program other than VirusScan if they wish.

Students who use a different program are responsible for ensuring that their virus definitions are kept up-to-date. Note also that ITS does not provide technical support for any anti-virus software other than VirusScan.

To download a free copy of McAfee VirusScan with perpetually-updated virus definitions, visit the Smith software download site.



4. Additional Anti-Malware Protection Strongly Recommended


Since many threats to computers and networks now come via web browsers and malware, we strongly recommend that all Windows users install the following anti-malware programs from the Smith software download site:
  • CCleaner
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Once you have installed these programs, if your browser behaves strangely and you suspect that your computer is infected with malware, follow these steps:

  1. Close all browser windows.

  2. Open CCleaner, check for updates, then run the program.

  3. After CCleaner finishes running, open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, check for updates, then run the program.

Even if your computer is running smoothly and you have no browser problems, we recommend running these programs once a week.



5. Not New, But Still Critically Important

As always, students are responsible for installing all operating system updates provided for their computers by Microsoft and Apple. Installing Windows or OS X updates is your strongest defense against malicious attacks on your computer.
