Macintosh users must create a connection to the DATAVOL on the
Novell network in order to access their home directory,
dropbox, and shared drives. The instructions below explain how to mount the DATAVOL and create an alias on your desktop.
Connecting to Novell DATAVOL
Navigating the DATAVOL, Find your H: drive
Create an Alias to your H: drive or Shared Folder
Connecting to Novell DATAVOL
- Open the Finder or click on your Desktop.
- From the Go menu, and select Connect to server.
- Enter or select your server address from the list, then click on the Connect button.

- Enter your Novell Username and Password, then click Connect.

To save your password for quick connections in the future, put a check next to "Remember password in keychain" (see image above). If you want the server to ask for your password every time you connect, do not check this box.
Note: If your login fails, clear the username field, then enter
a period, followed by your Novell username and your full
Novell context.
Staff example: .username.[dept].ad.sc
Faculty example: .username.[div#].fac.ac.sc
Student example: .username.[alphabet-range].stu.ac.sc
Note: If you don't know your full Novell context, please call
the User Support Center at x4487.
- When asked to select a volume to mount, choose the one that contains DATAVOL.

- Click OK.
- DATAVOL is now "mounted" to your computer. This means that you have connection the server. You can treat this connection like an external hard drive.
The connection is available from the Finder Sidebar or the Desktop. (See the images below.)

Navigating the DATAVOL
First, connect to DATAVOL and open your connection (see instructions above). At the root of your DATAVOL connection are a number of folders.
To find your H: drive (your personal file space), double-click on HOME. Double-click on the folder titled with your username. This is your H: drive.
To find a shared folder (the P: drive on a PC), double-click on SHARED. Double-click on the folder with your department's abbreviated title. Find your department's shared folder and double-click on it to open the folder. This is your P: drive.
To access your drop-box, double-click on DROPBOX. Double-click on the folder with your department's abbreviated title. Staff and Faculty with drop-boxes in this department are sorted alphabetically by username. (Not all Staff and Faculty have drop-boxes.) To access someone else's dropbox, you will login to their server (with your username) and find it in the same way. For more information, see the Using Dropboxes to Exchange Files page.

Create an Alias to your H: Drive or Shared Folder
First, connect to DATAVOL and open your connection (see instructions above). At the root of your DATAVOL connection are a number of folders.
Navigate to the folder ABOVE the folder you want to create an alias to. For example, to create an alias to your H: drive, you will want to open the HOME folder and simply find your H: drive in the list, but do not open it.
- Select the folder by single-clicking on it.
- Hold down the option key and the command key (apple key) at the same time.
- Still holding down the option key and command key, use your mouse to drag the selected folder to the desktop. Release the mouse. Release the option and command keys.
- This creates an alias (shortcut) to the folder on your desktop. If you saved your password in the keychain, this alias will automatically open a connection to your DATAVOL when you click on it (even if you have not mounted the DATAVOL yet).
Repeat this process for any shared folders or drop-boxes that you access often.
