CONFIGURING A POP/IMAP CLIENT TO ACCESS GROUPWISE

The User Support Center provides basic configuration support for Mac users who use Apple Mail or other POP/IMAP clients to access their GroupWise messages.

Windows users are encouraged to use the GroupWise desktop client, which can be downloaded at no cost from the Smith software site. However, if you decide to use a POP or IMAP account instead, be sure to read the following information before you begin.

Using POP/IMAP has the following disadvantages:

  • You do not have access to your personal GroupWise calendar.
  • You cannot access POP/IMAP accounts from a campus computer center or classroom.
  • You are responsible for backing up your own email files. ITS does not back up POP/IMAP accounts.

Choosing an Account Type

If you do choose to use an email client (like Mozilla Thunderbird) to check your GroupWise email, you must decide whether you want an IMAP account or a POP account:

  • If you choose IMAP, your messages will be left on the server and copied to your computer. All of your mail will still be accessible from other computers using GroupWise WebAccess. ITS recommends using this configuration.

  • A POP account will download all of the mail from the GroupWise server and store it on your computer. If you set up your computer this way, all of your email will be stored on your computer. If you check your email from another location using GroupWise web, you will see only any new messages you haven't downloaded yet.
