Installing the GroupWise Desktop Client

NOTE: Please print these instructions before beginning the installation.

GroupWise is the recommended email program for all Smith students, staff, and faculty.  All on-campus students, staff, and faculty should follow the instructions below to download and install the GroupWise desktop client.

In addition, we encourage all off-campus students, staff, and faculty with a high-speed Internet connection to install and use the GroupWise desktop client for their email.

To install the GroupWise desktop client, you will need:

  • A computer running Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP.
  • A high-speed Internet connection.  All on-campus students, staff, and faculty have this capability through the built-in dataport in their residence house or office. If you are off-campus, you will need a cable modem, satellite link, or DSL service for the desktop client to function properly..

Mac OS 10.x users : There is currently no version of the GroupWise desktop client for Mac OS 10. Until one is available, we recommend accessing your email using GroupWise WebAccess or MacMail. For information about MacMail, see: www.smith.edu/its/tara/groupwise/macmail.html

Additional Instructions for Off-campus Users

When the installation is complete, right-click on the GroupWise icon on your desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  1. In the Target field, you should see the following text:
    c:\novell\groupwise\grpwise.exe

  2. For everyone except Division 1 faculty and staff:  Add the following text to that line, beginning with a space:

      /@u-username /ipa-131.229.64.123

Be sure to include a space in front of every "/" character, including one at the beginning to separate the .exe from the new text.

Also, be sure to replace username with your own GroupWise username (e.g., pjohnson):

Division 1 Faculty & Staff: Add the following text to the line, beginning with a space:

      /@u-username /ipa-131.229.64.43

  3. The text in the Target field should now read something like this:

    c:\novell\groupwise\grpwise.exe /@u-pjohnson /ipa-131.229.64.123

(or ".43" for Division 1 faculty and staff)
