FILE TRANSFER

Accessing Files on Your Smith H: Drive from a Non-Networked Computer
Whether you're a student in a Smith residence house or working off-campus, it's easy to transfer files back and forth between your own computer and your Smith network drive ("H: drive" on a PC, or "home directory" on a Mac.)

Switching to Secure File Transfer  NEW!
Beginning in 2008, all Smith web servers will support only secure file transfer. This document explains how users of Contribute, Dreamweaver, Fetch, or WS_FTP LE can switch from non-secure to secure file transfer.

Using Core FTP
  NEW!
Core FTP is a secure file transfer program that allows you to safely transfer files between a Windows computer and a networked file server. This document explains how to install and use the program.

Using Fetch on a Macintosh computer  NEW!
Fetch is a file transfer program for Mac OS X that can be used to transfer files between your computer and a webserver or network drive. Fetch supports both File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), and allows a networked Macintosh to transfer files with any connected machine that supports FTP or SFTP.

Students: SSH Secure Shell Client & Secure File Transfer for Windows
Secure Shell Client is a terminal emulation program that replaces PowerTerm. SFTP is a secure file transfer program that allows you to safely transfer files between a Windows computer and a networked file server. This document explains how to install and use Secure Shell Client & Secure File Transfer on a student Windows computer.

Staff & Faculty: SSH Secure Shell & Secure File Transfer for Windows
Secure Shell Client is a terminal emulation program that replaces PowerTerm. SFTP is a secure file transfer program that allows you to safely transfer files between a Windows computer and a networked file server. This document explains how to install and use Secure Shell Client & Secure File Transfer on a networked Windows computer.

Terminal: SSH for Mac OS X
Terminal is a utility that gives you direct access to the command line in Mac OS X. This document explains how to use Terminal to make an SSH connection to a remote host.

Using WS_FTP LE on a Windows Computer

WS_FTP LE is a non-secure file transfer program for Windows. This document explains how to use WS_FTP to transfer files between a Windows computer and a networked file server.

Using Portable Storage Devices
At one time all PCs and Macs came with a floppy disk drive, but that is no longer the case. In place of floppies, users now have many different types of storage devices to choose from. This document will help you decide which storage device will best accommodate your files and the way you work.

Using a Jump Drive
Copying Data to a Compact Disc Using Roxio Easy CD Creator for Windows
Burning Files to Disc on a Mac  NEW!

Using Dropboxes to Exchange Files
When staff and faculty need to transfer a file to another employee at Smith, they can send it as an email attachment (unless it is too large) or they can put it in the other person's dropbox. All staff and faculty have a personal dropbox on their server.
