CONNECTING TO INTERNET NATIVE BANNER FROM OFF-CAMPUS

Authorized Smith users can access Internet Native Banner (INB) forms from off-campus using a Windows computer, the Internet Explorer web browser, and a high-speed Internet connection (DSL or cable modem).  ITS does not currently support dial-up access to INB.

Before you begin, be sure you are familiar with Smith's policy on remote access for administrative information systems.

Initial setup
Testing your connection
Turning off proxy authentication

Initial Setup

  1. Open an Internet Explorer window and click on Tools, then Internet Options.

  2. In the Internet Options window, click on the Connections tab.

  3. If you are connecting with a cable modem, proceed to step 5 below.

  4. If you have a DSL connection, look in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings list:

    1. If you see the name of your DSL service provider (e.g., Verizon online), click on it to select it, then proceed to step 5.

    2. If the list is empty, proceed to step 5.

  5. Click on the LAN Settings button at the bottom of the window.

  6. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window:

    1. Locate the Proxy server area at the bottom of the window.

    2. Put a checkmark in the checkbox beside Use a Proxy server for your LAN.

Note: You will later uncheck this option to turn off proxy authentication when you finish your INB session and wish to access other websites.

    3. Put a checkmark in the checkbox beside Bypass proxy server for local addresses.

    4. Click on the Advanced button.

  7. In the Proxy Settings window, enter the following data for both the HTTP and Secure server types:

    Proxy address to use:  proxyin.smith.edu
    Port:   3128

  8. In the Exceptions field, enter the following text, including all punctuation marks:

    www*; *.com; *.org; *.net; *.info

  9. Click OK to close all windows and return to your browser.

Testing Your Connection

  1. In the browser address bar, enter: https://banner.smith.edu:9999/

  2. When prompted, enter your Novell network username and password. (Not your Banner username and password.)

  3. When you see the error screen below...

Click on your browser's Refresh button to clear the error and proceed.

  4. At the Smith College Internet Native Banner Attention screen, select Windows XP or Windows 98, depending on your operating system.

Note: If you don’t already have the Jinitiator program installed on your home computer, you will be prompted to download it. You only need to do this once. Follow the instructions on the screen. Please be patient, as the installation will take a couple of minutes.

  5. When the Enter Network Password window appears, enter your Novell network username and password again.

  6. When the Oracle Developer Forms Runtime window appears, enter your Banner username and password in the Logon box.

Congratulations! You are now connected to Internet Native Banner.

  1. Open an Internet Explorer window and click on Tools, then Internet Options.

  2. In the Internet Options window, click on the Connections tab.

  3. Click on the LAN Settings button at the bottom of the window.

  4. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, uncheck the "Use a Proxy server for your LAN" option.

  5. Click OK twice to return to the browser window.
