TELEPHONES

The college's telephone system is maintained and supported by Information Technology Services, with telephone and voicemail support provided by the ITS User Support Center.

If your telephone is broken, if you need help using voicemail, if you need to add, remove, or move a phone, or if you need to change your phone service, call the User Support Center at ext. 4487. Please note that modems, fax machines, and answering machines cannot be connected to Smith's digital phone system.

Information about telephone and voicemail features is available on TARA, the ITS technical documention website. Additional hardcopy documentation can be obtained from the User Support Center in Stoddard 23.

Student Telephone Services

Each on-campus student is provided with a telephone and personal extension on the college's digital telephone system, as well as a voice mailbox on the Smith voicemail system.  Students can make on-campus, local, and 800 calls using their Smith telephone. To make long-distance calls, students must use a pre-paid phonecard or calling card.

Student telephones are serviced by the college. Problems with telephones should be directed to the User Support Center at x4487.  Questions about available services and billing should be directed to Student Telephone Services at ext. 2082.

Teleconferencing Services for Faculty & Staff

Smith offers faculty and staff access to the ReadyConference Plus teleconferencing service provided by Premiere Conferencing. Click here to view a company brochure describing the service.

If you wish to use this service, contact Sharon Moore (x2624, smoore@email.smith.edu) to request an account. You will be sent a wallet card with a toll-free number to use to reach the service, a moderator passcode, and a participant passcode.

Once the account is set up, no reservations are required to use the service. Entering the moderator passcode automatically establishes a conference call, and callers entering the associated participant passcode are automatically added to the call.

Premiere also offers the ability to upload a Powerpoint presentation or other Microsoft file that can be viewed on the Web by all participants and centrally controlled by the moderator.

The cost for the audio service is $.15 per minute for each phone dialed into the service provider (multiple participants behind a single speaker phone are only counted as one). The web feature also has a $.15 per minute charge for each login.

All charges are billed back to your organization, which you provide at the time you establish your account.

Other feature of the service include:

  • Linked website to share a slide presentation during the conference call
  • Ability to record the call for later playback*
  • Ability to lock the conference so no additional participants can join
  • Ability to Mute/Unmute all participant lines to block background noise
  • Ability to add participants via dial-out

*There is no charge to have a conference recorded, but the regular port charge (i.e. $.15/minute) applies for each playback. Premiere will store the recording for approximately 30 days, it is also possible to get a CD of the recording for an additional $15 charge.
