CENTER FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGES & CULTURES (CFLAC)

The Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLAC) is a state-of-the-art language learning facility. It houses a network of student workstations with integrated computer, audio, and video components for the study of foreign language, literature, and culture.

In the Center, students may explore a foreign culture with the aid of interactive videodiscs and tapes, digitized video and audio, CD-ROM, DVD, and CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) programs. The center also supports an audio tape library where students may check out audiocassettes for over 30 courses in 10 foreign languages.

CFLAC services include:

  • Access to multimedia technology for students (30 Macintosh and Windows workstations, including twelve with interactive videodisc; 10 videotape viewing workstations and six audio tape listening stations
  • Two multimedia development stations
  • Foreign language word processing, on-line exercises and courseware
  • Preparation and duplication of audio materials for class use
  • Development support for faculty foreign language multimedia projects
  • An electronic classroom in Wright 233
  • Workshops for foreign language word processing applications, text-based exercise authoring, and multimedia authoring programs.

Student Multimedia Development Area

Located at the back of the Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures, the Student Multimedia Development Area (SMDA) provides consulting for students who need help with multimedia presentations. Student consultants and professional staff can assist students with PowerPoint presentations, creating and using electronic visuals, video digitizing, scanning, and interactive multimedia applications. Students in foreign languages have priority, but all are welcome.

Location: CFLAC is located in the basement of Wright Hall (#7), across from the Jahnige Computer Lab.
