Digital Media Workshops Fall 2012

The Center for Media Production will be offering a series of media workshops taught by student media consultants from October 15th through October 23rd, 2012. The sessions which run 60 minutes or less will be held Monday - Thursday evenings in the CMP. No registration is necessary - please drop in at your convenience.


Topics covered include: Adobe Photoshop, Digital Audio Recording, Canon Rebel Photography, GarageBand Recording, iMovie Basics, and Video Production Basics.



Schedule of Workshops

Adobe Photoshop - Monday, Oct 15th and Wednesday, Oct 24th, 7-8pm
Instructor: Jessi Lawrence


Getting started with Adobe Photoshop introduces the beginner to the basic functions of Photoshop, including the interface, tools, cutting and pasting, and layers. Participants will learn to resize an image, convert an image to a different file format and create a web album using Adobe Bridge.

Canon Rebel Basics - Wednesday, Oct 17th, 7-8pm
Instructor: Kelly Jennings


In this workshop, participants will learn about the extensive capabilities of a Canon Rebel digital SLR and receive basic training on how to operate the camera. Important elements of photography will be addressed, and participants will leave with a basic understanding of how to use the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO speed to their advantage. Transfer of images to an Apple computer will also be covered, as well as a few basic editing techniques in iPhoto.

Audio Recording and Music Composition in GarageBand - Monday, Oct 22nd, 7-8pm
Instructor: Nandi Marumo


In this workshop participants will learn to record, compose and edit audio using GarageBand.  Participants will learn to record live audio from Rode microphones or from direct-connect instruments, using a ¼” input on a mixer. Also covered will be a review of Software Instruments, track editing, and basic mixing (panning, reverb, other effects).

iMovie11 Basics - Thursday, Oct 18th, 7-8pm
Instructor: Kim Chi Ngo


Participants in this workshop will learn basic and advanced editing skills in iMovie. Students will learn how to set up a new project, import and organize clips, and export and share a project. Participants will also learn different techniques to enhance projects such as working with titles and sound, transitions, and picture in picture.

Video Production Basics - Tuesday, Oct 23rd, 7-8pm
Instructor: June Lukuyu


Participants in this session will learn how to set up a camcorder, tripod and wireless microphone system to record digital video. Camera positions, angles, movements will be reviewed as well as zooming techniques and frame composition.


Zoom H4n Digital Audio Recorder - Tuesday, Oct 16th, 7-8pm
Instructor: Stephanie Greene


Session attendees will be introduced to the basic functions of the Zoom H4n digital audio recorder. Participants will be guided through the steps of checking audio settings, recording with the built in microphones, connecting an instrument via 1⁄4" cable and/or using an external microphone via the XLR input, and uploading recorded files to a computer.
