DUO Two-Factor Authentication
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication requires you to verify your identity on a second device (like your phone or other mobile device) before you finish logging into your account.
Why Do We Need It?
Requiring a second, separate verification step helps keep your account secure even if someone has your password.
Duo verification is completely independent from your username and password — Duo never sees your password.
How Does It Work?
Enter your username and password as usual.
Use your personal device to verify your identity.
Securely log in to your account.
Duo enrollment is required for all Smith instructors, staff, and students. If you are not enrolled in Duo, you will receive the enrollment prompt the first time you try to access your Smith account.
You will not be able to access any of your Smith accounts until you have enrolled a device in Duo.
Materials You Need to Begin:
A desktop or laptop computer. You must enroll in Duo from a computer - you cannot enroll in Duo on a mobile device like your smartphone or tablet.
Personal device to approve Duo Push notifications. Duo and Smith recommend using your personal mobile phone (smartphone or cell phone).
Duo mobile app. The app is available for download on the App and Google Play stores. If you are using a smartphone or tablet, we recommend installing the app before you begin to make the process easier later on.
Part 1: Enroll Your First Device
You need to enroll at least one personal device in Duo. The most common choice is a personal smartphone, like an iPhone or Android.
If you would like to see the steps below with images, please open the Enroll Your First Device PDF.
Open a new browser window and go to the Smith Portal or Workday. Log in with your Smith username and password.
The enrollment screen will appear automatically. Select Start setup.
Duo will ask you to identify what type of device you are planning to use. Select the appropriate option from the list, and then select Continue.
Use the instructions below to enroll the device you chose. Skip steps 1-3 and begin with step 4 for your device.
After you have finished setting up your first device, continue to Part 2 below to add a backup device.
Part 2: Enroll a Backup Device
We highly recommend adding a second device in case you don’t have access to your primary device - for example, if you leave your phone at home or lose your security key. Having a backup device means you'll still be able to log into your Smith accounts.
If you would like to see the steps below with images, please open the Enroll a Backup Device PDF.
Open a new browser window on your computer and go to the Smith Portal or Workday. Log in with your Smith username and password.
When you get the Duo prompt, select Add a new device from the options on the left. Note: If Duo was set to “remember me for 30 days” and skips the Duo page, you can make it appear by using a different browser, a private window, or an incognito window in Chrome.
You will need to verify your identity before you can add a device. Follow the prompt and approve the Duo request using your primary device (smartphone, cell phone, tablet, security key, etc.).
Duo will ask you to identify what type of device you are planning to use. Select the appropriate option from the list, and then select Continue.
Follow the steps in the appropriate section below to add your second device:
Pro Tips:
If you want to add another smartphone but do not want to install the Duo Mobile app, add the smartphone as a Landline. This will allow that smartphone number to receive phone calls from Duo to approve an authentication request.
If you want to add another smartphone and only want to use the Duo Mobile app for approving requests, add the smartphone as a Tablet. This will skip the phone number addition and you will not need to add a phone number.
To confirm the device was successfully added and to view your other Duo devices, select My Settings and Devices from the left menu.
